How to Pack Fragile Items Before Shifting

Fragile items are the reason most people worry about moving at all. One glass-top table, a set of crockery or a mirror is all it takes to make the difference between a smooth move and a heart-sinking moment at the new house. The good news is that breakables are the easiest things to protect - if you pack them the right way.

Start with the right material

The three essentials are bubble wrap, packing paper and strong cartons. Bubble wrap cushions the item itself, packing paper fills the space around it, and the carton takes the weight of everything stacked above. Newspaper works for everyday items, but it leaves ink marks - use clean packing paper for white and light-coloured goods, and wrap mirrors and framed pictures face-in so the glass does not touch the carton directly.

Wrap each piece individually

Every plate, glass and bowl gets its own layer of bubble wrap before it goes anywhere near a carton. Never nest plates without wrapping - they slide against each other in transit. For glasses, stuff the inside with paper so they keep their shape, then wrap the outside. Cups with handles get the handle wrapped first, because handles snap before anything else.

Line the carton properly

A fragile carton needs a cushion at the bottom, a cushion at the top and firm packing all around. Heavy items go at the bottom, light items on top. Keep the weight sensible - a carton full of plates should be liftable by one person, which means a small carton. Fill every gap with crumpled paper so nothing moves when you shake the box gently. A box that rattles is a box that will not survive.

Handle special items with extra care

Large mirrors and glass tops travel best wrapped in a blanket over the bubble wrap, marked fragile and carried upright. LED and television screens get corner protection plus a padded front. Lampshades travel in their own carton, and chandelier parts are wrapped and labelled so nothing small gets lost. If something is genuinely expensive or sentimental - artwork, heirloom crockery - keep it in your own car rather than the truck.

Label and load smartly

Write "FRAGILE" and the room name on the carton, and tell the crew which boxes contain breakables. Fragile cartons load last and unload first, and they sit on top of the stack - never at the bottom, never under a heavy sofa. This one habit prevents most damage that happens after the packing is done.

Mark the carton so you can see it

Write "FRAGILE" on the side and the top of the box, not just on one corner, and draw a line around the carton so the warning is visible no matter which way it sits in the stack. Add arrows for items that must stay upright. The crew is fast on moving day - a carton that advertises its contents clearly gets treated the way it needs to be treated.
